How-To
Installing a Remote-Controlled Z-Wave Lighting System
By David Powell
Last week we undertook the installation of a home network controller, a thermostat, and a car-based control system for your security lighting. This week we'll show you how to install another classic Z-Wave setup, a lighting system with a handheld remote controller. We'll use the GE Jasco Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Control Remote and the GE Jasco 3-Way Lighting Kit.
Installation Preparation
Tools and Materials
- Flat Head Screwdriver
- Phillips Screwdriver
- Wire Strippers
- Additional Wire and Wire Nuts
- Hot Stick or Multimeter
- Flash Light
Before you start you should read all instruction manuals. Also, remember that working with electricity can be dangerous and even fatal. If you are not comfortable working with electricity, hire a professional. MAKE SURE YOU TURN THE POWER OFF AT THE BREAKER PANEL and make sure the power is off using a Hot Stick or Multimeter.
Installing the GE Jasco 3-Way Lighting Kit
Step 1: Make sure you turn the power off to the switch
Step 2: Remove the wall covers and both of the existing three-way switches without disconnecting the wires.

Figure 1: Remove Both Switches
Step 3: Double check that the power is off using a Hot Stick or Multimeter.
Step 4: Disconnect the wires from both switches and separate the wires to ensure none of them can touch.
Step 5: Temporarily restore power to the switches and carefully use a Hot Stick or Multimeter to find where the Source (power) and Load (light) are located. They should both be located in the same electrical box. If they are not in the same box then you will need to wire them so that they are. Take note of which is the Source and which is the Load and then turn the power back off.
Step 6: Make sure the power is off using your Hot Stick or Multimeter
Step 7: Connect the Dimmer switch which has five wires and an Air Gap switch.

Step 9: Screw the new switches into the electrical box and replace the wall covers. Make sure you carefully place the wires in the box.
Step 10: Restore power and test.
Programming the GE Jasco Wireless Lighting Controller
Using the GE Jasco Wireless Lighting Controller to program Z-Wave devices is very simple. In fact it's so intuitive that once you learn how to perform one function — such as adding a device — you should be able to figure out other functions, like removing a device.
Step 1: Press and hold SETUP until both the red and green LEDs blink twice.
Step 2: Press ADD once. (Red LED blinks once)
Step 3: Press Group once (Red LED blinks once)
Step 4: Press a digit (1-9) for the group you wish to add the device to. Press SHIFT and the digit (1-9) if you are adding a device to groups 10 through 18. (Green LED blinks rapidly.)
Step 5: Press the button on the device so that it sends its information to the remote and receives information from the remote.
Step 6: When the LED blinks twice, you have successfully added the device to your group. Note that if the LED emits one long, steady blink, you have pressed an invalid key or the device has not been successfully added to your group. Repeat steps 1-6 if this occurs.
As you can see, the button sequences make perfect sense. If you want to delete a light you simply press Setup -> Delete -> Light and press the light switch you want to remove.
Pump Up Your Imagination
Here are some installation Tips and Tricks to get you motivated to do this project in your own home. As I mentioned earlier the GE Jasco Wireless Lighting Controller is simple in design. GE Jasco has a more complex version with and LCD screen. You could use the remote with the LCD screen or any other controller of your choice as a primary controller. Then use the GE Jasco remote without an LCD for in the bathroom as a secondary controller.
I've added my Fan, Heat Lamp, and Main bathroom lights into my controller. As you can see in the photo below, my wife enjoys being able to fill the bath tub up with bubbles and safely get in the tub, light some candles and then dim the lights. This is a simple project that improves safety and comfort and can be completed in less than 20 minutes.

PostScript: Automate Your Bathroom Lighting
When looking at homes with my family four years ago the deciding factor was the large jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom. Ever since then we have always wanted a way to turn the lights off while sitting in the tub. The GE Jasco Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Control Remote seems to be the perfect solution for us. The remote controller is very simple in design making it easy to use for anyone in the family.
The GE Jasco Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Controller is not water proof or even water resistant. In a future article I will show you how to modify the remote control by heavily coating the electronics with an electronics grade epoxy. Doing so will certainly void your warranty so do it at your own risk. Just be sure you take special precaution to prevent damage to your controller.
